Arizona Guardsmen charged in marijuana smugglingThree Army National Guard sergeants are accused of using their positions of authority to transport marijuana from Mexico into Arizona, an official said Saturday. Francisco Marinez, Robert Baker and Raul Fransico Portillo, 30, were arrested on felony charges of possession, conspiracy, and transportation and sale of marijuana, according to Santa Cruz County, Arizona Sheriff Tony Estrada.
"We suspect there is more involvement," Estrada said. He said the continuing investigation might lead to more arrests. Marinez was arrested July 14 in Arivaca in a National Guard vehicle when the Arizona Department of Public Safety found 188 pounds of marijuana in it, Estrada said. Baker was arrested July 15 at his Tucson, Arizona home. Agents arrested Portillo Friday at his South Side home in the 7000 block of South Maxine Circle.
"Obviously this is very discouraging and disappointing," Estrada said. "It illustrates how assertive drug groups are on both sides of the border." He also said "that it goes to show the agencies are very aware, watchful and mindful" of what is happening at the border. Estrada said the arrests were the result of joint efforts of many law enforcement agencies, including the Nogales Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Immigration and Customs, the National Guard and the FBI. Estrada said the three men were taken to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department. Marinez was released to a third party. Portillo is being held on a $75,000 bond and Baker's bond is $25,000.
