Meth lab found in Arizona

HEREFORD, Arizona -- A meth lab found inside a mobile home led to the arrest of a woman wanted on two outstanding warrants from Texas for alleging she manufactured illegal substances in that state, said the supervisor for the Border Alliance Group.
Arrested was Karol Boaz, 35, who was inside the mobile home at 9806 Chippewa St. near Hereford Road after BAG members were given permission to enter the residence, Arizona Sgt. Thad Smith said this morning.

Materials used in making methamphetamine were in plain sight, which led Arizona law enforcement officers to obtain a search warrant, Smith said.

At least two ounces of finished meth, were found "and that's a pretty substantial amount," he said.

BAG, a special task force consisting of different Arizona law enforcement agencies that work on drug cases, has been investigating the residence, Smith said.

The special task force is operated by the sheriff's department and includes Arizona Department of Public Safety officers and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency people and both agencies were at the scene, said Smith, who is with the county sheriff's department.

It came to a head Friday, when members of the state Child Protective Services were doing a welfare check on an 11-year-old child in a residence not far from where the meth lab was located, the sergeant said.

The CPS people called the Cochise County, Arizona Sheriff's Department to let them know they had heard about a meth lab and provided some additional information, Smith said.

"It came out of the blue," the sergeant said. BAG responded immediately.

During the work in the mobile home, the Fry Fire District Hazardous Material Team provided support, Smith said.

Capt. Mike McKearney, Fry Fire District's hazmat coordinator, said the department provided air monitoring and other help as law enforcement agencies were inside the home.

"We provided gloves, booties and respirators," he said.

Smith said it was not until 6:30 a.m. Saturday that the site was cleared, after nearly 12 hours of work.

The investigation is continuing and BAG has a number of suspects that could lead to additional arrests, he said.
