DPS nabs 4 pounds of meth in ArizonaArizona State police arrested a Missouri couple on drug trafficking charges Wednesday afternoon as they tried to travel through Flagstaff, Arizona. In the couple's car, officers found 4 pounds of meth, which has a street value in Flagstaff, Arizona of $40,000.
An officer with the Arizona Department of Public Safety stopped a gray 2000 Ford car heading eastbound on Interstate 40 for a traffic violation just after 3:15 p.m., said Detective Jay Atwater of the Flagstaff, Arizona office of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
After speaking with the couple, the officer asked if he could search the car. When the couple refused, the Arizona officer requested a drug-sniffing dog. Atwater said the dog "alerted" on the car's trunk.
The officer found the meth in the trunk in a small, nylon bag, Atwater said.
Mark Lindemann, 37, and Christa Westall, 34, were booked into the Coconino County, Arizona Jail on charges of possession of dangerous drugs for sale and transportation of dangerous drugs for sale.
Atwater said the couple was traveling from the Los Angeles area to Rolla, Missouri.
Sgt. Randy Weems of the Metro anti-narcotics task force said meth is sold on Flagstaff's streets in gram quantities. Prices range from $60 to $120 a gram. Typically, a gram of meth costs about $80 a gram.
Weems said dealers make their money by buying the meth in bulk, or per pound. Weems said meth goes for about $8,000 a pound in northern Arizona, and the price per pound increases the farther east the drug moves through the country.
Atwater said meth is approximately $10,000 a pound in Missouri, where the couple was heading.
