Arizona: Reputed drug boss now may be in U.S.Reputed Mexican drug lord Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada-Garcia may have fled Mexico to the United States, Drug Enforcement Administration officials said Thursday.
They have dubbed Zambada-Garcia, 55, of Sinaloa, Mexico, the country's "most-wanted drug fugitive."
He is operating "one of the largest and most powerful drug trafficking operations in Mexico" and smuggling wholesale quantities of cocaine through nearly every port of entry in Arizona, according to the DEA.
Arizona authorities unveiled two billboards Thursday along Interstate 10 in southern Arizona with Zambada-Garcia's photo.
They hope to disrupt his drug-distribution cells in Tucson, Arizona and Phoenix, Arizona said Ramona Sanchez, a DEA spokeswoman in Phoenix, Arizona.
Zambada-Garcia was the prime target of Operation Trifecta, a 19-month investigation that led to the July arrests of more than 240 drug traffickers, including 10 in Arizona.
An indictment unsealed in July charged Zambada-Garcia, 55, and two of his top lieutenants with trafficking more than $47 million worth of cocaine to New York, New Jersey, Chicago and California.
The Zambada-Garcia cartel recently emerged as one of the top cocaine and marijuana smugglers from the Pacific coast after a bloody battle with the Arellano-Felix Organization.
As the Tijuana-based Arellano-Felix cartel lost power in 2002, Zambada-Garcia consolidated control in Arizona, according to the DEA.
Sanchez said the DEA hopes to make Zambada-Garcia a "household name."
Anyone with information is asked to call the DEA at 1-866-DEA-PHNX.
