Cocaine bust tops $5 million in ArizonaSnow traveled into northern Arizona Friday afternoon. But it isn't the kind on which to ski. Officers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety nabbed 37 1/2 pounds of cocaine with a street value of more than $5 million. The cocaine was headed to Miami.
Det. Tom Perkins of the DPS Flagstaff, Arizona office said an officer stopped a 1998 Lincoln Towncar just after 4 p.m. on Interstate 40 east of Flagstaff, Arizona for unsafe lane usage. The driver was extremely nervous while the Arizona officer spoke with him.
After the Arizona officer discovered "several inconsistencies" in the driver's story -- like where he was coming from and where he was going -- the Arizona officer asked if he could search the car. The driver gave verbal and written consent to search the car, Perkins said.
"In searching the vehicle, the Arizona officer found indicators of a possible false compartment in the dashboard area," Perkins said.
He added that he could not elaborate on what those indicators were.
The car was taken to the DPS yard for closer inspection. A drill was used to make a hole in the firewall in the engine compartment, Perkins said. "A white, powdery substance was on the tip of the drill and it flashed positive for cocaine."
When Arizona investigators removed the windshield of the car, they found a false compartment in the dash, which had been concealed with Bondo and fresh spray paint. Investigators removed a total of 18 bundles weighing 37 1Ú2 pounds from compartment, Perkins said.
The driver of the Lincoln, Marcelo Bermudez, 40, of Jacksonville, Fla., was booked into the county jail on charges of possession of cocaine for sale and transportation of cocaine for sale.
Perkins said the cocaine originated in Las Vegas and was destined for Miami.
"We suspect this load is going to Miami to be distributed to other parts of the country," Perkins said, adding that the cocaine, when broken down and diluted for sale would have a $5 million street value.
