A clean getaway -- denied in ArizonaArizona Officer Mace Craft said he stopped a black Lincoln Towncar for speeding just east of Flagstaff, Arizona on Interstate 40. The driver and the passenger were extremely nervous when he spoke with them, Craft said. The Arizona officer who gave Craft backup timed the driver's pulse rate at 128 beats per minute.
The stories each man gave conflicted, Craft said.
The men gave Craft consent to search the vehicle. A K-9 unit also was called to the scene.
"The dog went to right underneath the passenger side dash," Craft said. The search concentrated on that area. Craft said he was about to let the men go, when he looked down into an air vent in the engine compartment and saw a plastic package.
"We almost missed it," Craft said.
Inside the package was meth, weighing 1.5 pounds.
Jaime R. Serrano-Gonzalez, 22, and Aldo A. Mendoza-Ramirez, 28, both of Phoenix, were booked into the county jail on charges of possession and transportation of dangerous drugs for sale.
Craft said the two men had been stopped by a DPS officer a short time earlier in Yavapai County, Arizona near Camp Verde, Arizona. The officer gave them a ticket for having illegally tinted windows. Craft added that the tinting on the front windows had been torn off just after the men left Camp Verde, Arizona.
After finding meth, Craft took a look at the gas tank. The port used to fill the tank was missing screws -- an indicator that drugs may have been put in the tank. A technician put a camera scope into the tank and could see what appeared to be plastic wrapping.
The tank was removed at the DPS fleet yard in Flagstaff, Arizona. No drugs were found inside.
Craft said the drugs were en route from Phoenix, Arizona to Omaha, Neb., a city experiencing a rise in the meth trade. Agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration will be taking over the investigation.
Jim Molesa, a Flagstaff, Arizona-based DEA agent, said Omaha is a target spot for the meth trade. "The Midwest is expriencing an eruption of meth abuse the Southwest saw a few years ago and is slowly moving eastword," Molesa said.
The difference now is that where Arizona's meth business was the product of smaller "mom and pop" labs, the the bulk of meth going to the Midwest is coming from meth factories in California, and the components used in the making of meth are supplied by Mexican drug cartels.
"Then they use our highway system to transport to market place," Molesa said. "The cartels like this because they're not relying on third parties for products."
Mexican drug cartels are no longer middle men, Molesa said.
According to information from the Metro anti-narcotics task force in Flagstaff, Arizona meth has a street value in the city of approximately $100 per gram. That would make Friday's seizure worth approximately $67,000. Drug Rehab by County
